Sir Martin Frobisher (The Golden hind series), written by William McFee

Welcome aboard the Golden Hind, where the dashing Sir Martin Frobisher takes us on an exhilarating maritime adventure, bathed in the romantic glow of 16th-century exploration. If you've ever wanted to feel like a pirate without the whole "plunder and pillage" part, then this book is your ticket to high seas excitement - minus the eye patches and peg legs!

So, what's the deal with our hero, Sir Martin? Well, hold onto your hats! He's not just a regular explorer; he's a man on a quest to find the fabled Northwest Passage. Ah yes, the infamous route that everyone and their grandmother were after during the Age of Discovery. Spoiler alert though: if you're looking for a straightforward map, you're out of luck.

Frobisher, being the intrepid explorer that he is, sails from England, accompanied by a motley crew more colorful than a box of Crayolas. Their shenanigans are more entertaining than a reality TV show. The crew includes all types: the brave, the cowardly, the hysterically incompetent, and those just hoping to find some semblance of gold (and let's face it, who doesn't like shiny things?). As they navigate treacherous waters, we get a front-row seat to their bickering, bad decisions, and questionable advice from sailors who clearly skipped a few days of their nautical training.

As Frobisher and his crew trek across the chilly Canadian seas (hello, icebergs!), the author gives us a delightful peek into the life aboard ship during this period. Let's just say it's no vacation on a cruise liner, given the lack of buffets and deck chairs. Instead, we're talking about freezing temperatures, potential mutiny, and constant worry over getting eaten by polar bears - or worse, running out of rum!

Throughout the journey, Frobisher's ambitions clash with the realities of the harsh landscape and the even harsher crew. There are plenty of moments where you might wonder whether these guys are explorers or just really confused beachgoers who forgot their sunscreen.

Of course, any good adventure wouldn't be complete without a healthy dose of conflict. Including Frobisher's ambition colliding with the interests of other nations, proving that when it comes to discovering new lands, you can't have your cake and eat it too - especially when other explorers are greedy for the same slice.

In sum, Sir Martin Frobisher is a fascinating tidbit of historical fiction that blends humor, adventure, and the occasional touch of drama into the journey of one man's quest for glory on the high seas. Although I can't see the series getting its own blockbuster sequel, it certainly makes for a good read if you're interested in history with a sprinkle of sarcasm and plenty of maritime mishaps.

So grab your sea legs and dive into the tale before you find yourself shipwrecked in boredom! Who knows? You might even learn a thing or two about exploration... or at least how to navigate around ridiculous crew members.
