Anthem, written by Ayn Rand

Welcome to the dystopian future where the word "I" is as rare as a unicorn! In _Anthem_, Ayn Rand rolls out a thrilling tale set in a world so collectivized that individuals are stripped of their names and identities. That's right, folks, we're diving headfirst into a world where "we" is everything, and thinking for oneself is an absolute no-no.

Meet Equality 7-2521, our not-so-average hero, who aims to be the poster child for rebel teenagers everywhere. Our dear Equality has a penchant for reflecting on his individual desires, which, as you can guess, gets him into a whole lot of trouble. Imagine living in a society that bans any hint of individuality! Talk about suffocating!

As the story unfolds, we quickly learn that this society is obsessed with conformity-everyone is assigned roles and, you guessed it, they must stick to them. You want a career? Too bad! You're stuck as a street sweeper for life! But, of course, our protagonist feels a bit different-he's on a wild quest for knowledge and possibly enlightenment, or at least for a cool underground club where people can actually call themselves "I."

And here's a twist that would make any rom-com writer give a sly grin: Equality 7-2521 stumbles into a forbidden romance with Liberty 5-3000 (yes, that's her very catchy name). As they bond over their shared desire to, you know, be individuals, they begin plotting how to escape the suffocating grasp of collectivism and experience the sweet taste of freedom. Spoiler alert: romantic escapades are a big deal in this bleak setting!

Eventually, our hero stumbles upon a hidden treasure from the past: an old, dusty light bulb and the knowledge of electricity. Cue the dramatic music! This sparks a rebellious quest to reclaim what it means to be human. As Equality learns to embrace "I," he becomes the ultimate poster child for individualism.

However, this leads to quite a climax, where he's gotta choose between the safety of the conformist lifestyle or the blazing, unpredictable glory of freedom (and maybe a little chaos). Can we hear a collective gasp?

At this point, if you're thinking, "Gee, this sounds a little like a manifesto for egoism and individualism," you'd be pretty spot on. Ayn Rand uses this tale not just to entertain, but to preach to the choir about the merits of individual rights, asserting that selfishness (the good kind) is a virtue!

So, there you have it, folks! _Anthem_ wraps up with Equality 7-2521 embracing his identity and declaring he is "I" instead of "we." And with that, he shimmies into a new world of self-awareness, leaving behind the snooze-fest of collectivism.

In essence, if you fancy a short book with hefty philosophical debates dressed up in a somewhat ridiculous dystopian setting, grab _Anthem_ and prepare to find your own voice. Just be prepared to scream "I!" at the top of your lungs-preferably in a safe space!
