I Am Number Four (Lorien Legacies, 1), written by Pittacus Lore

Imagine being a teenager, but instead of figuring out prom dates and finals, you're constantly fleeing from intergalactic aliens trying to fry your brain and steal your powers. Welcome to the life of our hero, John Smith, aka Number Four, whose entire existence is pretty much a game of hide and seek with some very unfriendly extraterrestrial hunters.

Set in our good old planet Earth-specifically Ohio, because why not?-this story kicks off with John, who has a not-so-normal background. He's actually an alien from the planet Lorien, and he's hiding out on Earth with a handful of other survivors, all of whom have been marked in order of their importance. Yes, that's right. There are more "Numbers" like him, but you'd think they could have picked a better hiding strategy than just running around in t-shirts and jeans.

John is on the run from the Mogadorians (names sound familiar, huh?). These big bad aliens are on a mission to eliminate all the Lorien kids, starting with John in a very dramatic sequence of events. Spoiler alert: Number One is already toast, Number Two got snuffed out, and Number Three met an unfortunate end. So John is kind of sweating bullets about being next in line.

While he's trying to stay under the radar, John feels like he's living in a teenage angst movie. He develops super cool powers. You know, the usual-a little telekinesis here, some glowiness there. And let's not forget the obligatory crush on the school's hottest girl, Sarah. Every superhero has to have a love interest, right? It's practically in the handbook. Naturally, John can't just have an ordinary relationship; he's all angsty about keeping his super-powered identity a secret. Because hiding alien powers from your high school girlfriend is totally normal.

As the story progresses, the Mogadorians start closing in. The tension builds, and John realizes that it's not just about him anymore; it's about protecting his friends and standing up to those alien bullies. Amidst running, jumping, and occasional superhero declarations, John learns what it really means to fight for something bigger-like, say, saving his entire alien species from being wiped out. No pressure, right?

In a climactic showdown, John decides that he's tired of running. It's time to take a stand. Spoiler alert again: this leads to a hell of a lot of action, explosions, and a showdown that would make any action movie fan proud. Plus, there's a heartfelt realization about friendship and family that makes you gag a little-like all good YA novels should.

In conclusion, I Am Number Four combines teenage angst, sci-fi drama, and intergalactic survival into a delectable blend of excitement. It's a coming-of-age tale where the stakes are a tad higher than finding a prom date-you might want to save the universe instead! So buckle up and get ready for an alien adventure filled with romance, action, and the occasional brooding moments. Because if there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that high school is tough enough without extra-terrestrial hunters chasing you.
