Imagine a world where the Old West collides with supernatural chaos. Welcome to Wake of Vultures, the first thrilling installment in The Shadow series by the ever-so-creatively named Lila Bowen! Right off the bat, we'll meet our lead character, Nettie Lonesome, a young woman who doesn't wear cowboy boots or ride off into the sunset quite like your typical Western hero. Nope, she's a half-Indian, half-white orphan raised by a family of not-so-nice ranchers who treat her like their very own personal pack mule. Talk about motherly love!
Now, aside from dealing with the ever-so-charming racism and general lack of humanity surrounding her, Nettie also has a bit of a secret: she's got a knack for spotting the not-so-human residents of her world. You see, between the mundane troubles of everyday life (like finding someone who doesn't treat you like dirt), Nettie stumbles across all sorts of supernatural beings. Think werewolves, vampires (well, kind of), and other magical oddities-basically, the supernatural neighborhood watch but with fewer rules and more chaos.
Things take a turn for the super mega dramatic when Nettie decides to pack her bags and venture out on her own. After all, who needs a family that treats you like trash when you can explore the world filled with monsters and mayhem? Not this girl! Along the way, she encounters shadows of her past and uncovers the threads of her own identity, as she slowly begins to embrace the weirdness of who she is.
As she journeys through wild and sprawling settings, she meets a colorful cast of characters-each more eccentric than the last. There are allies, foes, and creatures that would make a Halloween horror movie look like a children's tea party. Between skirmishes with these supernatural beings and wearing outfits that scream "I am fierce and ready to kick butt," Nettie attempts to uncover her true heritage. Spoiler alert: it's messier than an unmade bed.
As the plot thickens (and trust me, it's thicker than molasses in January), Nettie must face her ultimate nemesis-her own fears. The girl has to figure out how to embrace the chaos around her while becoming the hero she never thought she could be. Because if there's one thing that ties this whole ruckus together, it's that everyone loves a good underdog story, especially one set against the backdrop of monsters and cowboys.
At its core, Wake of Vultures is about self-discovery, resilience, and combat boots being an excellent choice for a journey of a lifetime. It showcases how in a world filled with darkness and beasts, our protagonist must grapple with her destiny while cutting a path of her own in a society that's about as welcoming as a cactus in a balloon factory.
So, saddle up, folks! Nettie's adventure is equal parts thrilling and heart-wrenching, and trust me, you'll want to keep your eyes peeled for the next twists and turns of her unpredictable journey through a world that would rather shun her than celebrate her. Prepare for a ride that'll have you laughing, crying, and wondering why you didn't pick up the lasso sooner. Happy reading!
