Trail of Lightning (The Sixth World Book 1), written by Rebecca Roanhorse

Welcome to the Dinetah, a post-apocalyptic version of the American Southwest where climate change and mythological beings are running wild, and our protagonist, Maggie Hoskie, is the person you definitely don't want to run into in a dark alley. Why? Because she's a monster hunter-a real badass who can take down your average supernatural critter with a glare and maybe a flick of her wrist!

The story kicks off with Maggie trying to navigate her life in a world that has gone decidedly off the rails. After a flood wipes out much of civilization, the Navajo Nation has become a sort of oasis for the living (and the not-so-living). Here, ancient gods and legendary figures come to life alongside a sprinkle of good ol' American urban mythos. Think of it as a supernatural Wild West with a side of cultural reclamation. We love to see it!

Maggie's world is one of demons, gods, and a tragic past that is about as cheerful as a rain cloud (spoiler alert: it isn't). After being mentored by the mysterious and charming Coyote, who might just be the trickster god himself, she's been left to fend for herself-essentially saying, "Good luck, kid! You're gonna need it."

Things take a turn when Maggie is hired to investigate the gruesome murder of her friend. Yeah, that's right; when you thought monster hunting was just about catching the occasional ghost, here comes a murder mystery crashing in like a bull in a china shop. Plot twist: This murder is tied to something much bigger than Maggie could've ever imagined. There's a giant monster lurking in the shadows, which we all know is never a good sign.

As Maggie dives deeper into this supernatural mess, she encounters Kai, a handsome and enigmatic figure who seems to know more than he's letting on. Because nothing says "trustworthy" like a stranger with a mysterious past and a penchant for trouble! Spoiler alert: their chemistry sizzles, and who doesn't love some good old-fashioned romantic tension while fighting monsters?

The narrative is rich with Navajo culture, weaving traditional stories into the fabric of the plot. Maggie's journey teaches us not only about the Sixth World but also about the power of heritage, identity, and the importance of understanding and owning one's past. So, while Maggie might be busy slaying monsters, she's also unveiling deeper truths about herself and her people.

As the story unfolds, we see Maggie take on not just physical battles with various beings, but also her inner demons-literally and figuratively. The stakes get higher and higher, concluding with a climax so intense that you might just forget to breathe. But hey, that's what cliffhangers are for, right?

In summary, Trail of Lightning isn't just a ride through a fantastical landscape of gods and monsters. It's a powerful journey of self-discovery wrapped up in an electrifying narrative that zaps you from your mundane existence to a world where the supernatural thrives. So strap in, folks, because Maggie is here to teach us that sometimes, to find your identity, you may need to follow your own trail of lightning-and maybe take out a few monsters along the way.
