Hinds' Feet on High Places, written by Hannah Hurnard

Hold onto your hats, dear readers, because we're about to embark on a delightful (and slightly wacky) journey through the mystical hills of Hinds' Feet on High Places. Written by the charmingly imaginative Hannah Hurnard, this tale is less about traditional plot twists and more about wandering through allegorical landscapes that might just make you question your own life choices. Spoiler alert: There are no actual hinds, and no one is going to win a beauty contest for smooth footedness.

Our hero, or should I say heroine, is Much-Afraid (get it? Her name hints at her personality). Much-Afraid is a bit of a mess, feeling quite uncomfortable with her life in the Valley of Humiliation (not exactly a five-star resort). She's surrounded by her not-so-friendly relatives-Fearings, which sounds a lot like how many of us feel about family reunions. Oh, the anxiety! But never fear, our girl Much-Afraid is about to embark on a high-flying expedition to meet the Shepherd (who, for some reason, isn't a shepherd of actual sheep but of people with metaphorical baggage), and hopefully get some hinds' feet, which are literally the feet of a wild animal specialized for climbing mountains.

The story kicks off when Shepherd offers her an invitation: leave the dreary valley behind and journey to the High Places, where it's all sunshine, rainbows, and possibly a few existential crises. Of course, she must confront challenges (shocking, I know). Along the way, she picks up some charming companions: Sorrow and Suffering! Yep, you read that right. The more, the merrier, right? They must absolutely love party games.

Through trials and tribulations that would make even the most stoic philosopher roll his eyes, Much-Afraid learns some life lessons. She faces her fears, takes on obstacles, and-here comes the spoiler-eventually transforms into someone who can indeed scamper around on high places, possessing a newfound confidence (and hinds' feet). Who would have thought a little fearfulness and grief could lead to climbing metaphorical mountains and gaining lovely feet?

As she traverses this allegorical world (schedule that therapy session, please), the narrative drags her and us through thrilling adventures and somewhat tedious introspection. But isn't that life? Adventure combined with self-reflection, and doing both while having a bit of a giggle about it all. The lessons are as layered as a great cake: sometimes sweet, sometimes a bit nutty, but always with a sprinkle of profound truth.

Ultimately, Hinds' Feet on High Places is all about the transformation of our dear Much-Afraid. So, if you're ready to embrace your emotional baggage, laugh at your own fears, and pray your therapist won't charge you extra for all the allegorical flights of fancy, then dive into this book. Just remember, there are no hinds, and some of the climbing may require a solid pair of hiking boots and a good sense of humor. Happy reading!
