Psycho: A Novel, written by Robert Bloch

Welcome to the Twilight Zone of literature, where the cast of characters includes a cabin at a creepy motel, a mother who's a little too attached, and a protagonist whose sanity you might want to double-check. Psycho, written by the gloriously twisted Robert Bloch, has more plot twists than a pretzel factory and is almost as unsettling as your last family dinner.

At the heart of this novel is our not-so-innocent protagonist, Marion Crane. She's your average woman caught in a love affair-until she decides to borrow a lot of cash from her boss (who clearly should have locked his office better). With a suitcase full of money and a head full of bad decisions, Marion hits the road to rejoin her beau and pretend like life is peachy. Spoiler alert: it's not.

Marion has the bright idea to stop at a charming little motel called the Bates Motel, ran by Norman Bates, a seemingly sweet but exceedingly weird guy with a hidden agenda. He's the kind of guy who still seems to live in the shadow of his overbearing mother, who, spoiler alert again, isn't quite off-stage just yet. They share an unhealthy mother-son bond that could make Freud raise an eyebrow and maybe even take a few notes.

As events unfold, the storyline dips and dives like a rollercoaster, with the ever-growing tension between Marion and Norman. Just when you think things might become a quaint little romance (or at least a love story worthy of a rom-com), you'll get the shock of your life-Marion takes a shower, and you can pretty much guess what happens next. Screaming violins? Check. A surprise guest in the bathroom? Double check.

But it doesn't stop there! After our darling Marion meets her untimely end (yes, spoiler alert strikes again), the novel shifts into high gear. We dive into Norman's psyche, which is messier than most teenagers' bedrooms. With a split personality that could rival any soap opera villain, Norman Bates becomes the unhinged star of the show. You'll find yourself attempting to peel back the layers of his deranged mind, while simultaneously questioning your life choices.

The plot thickens (and curdles) as the story transitions into a murder mystery where everyone gets a turn at being suspicious. Detectives! Family members! A psychologist! Everybody's trying to solve the puzzle of who Norman really is and why his mother is so involved in their discussions-and spoiler alert: she's very much a part of the climax.

In a wonderfully shocking conclusion, readers are treated to the gnarly revelations surrounding Norman and his mother's true nature. Does he have too much of a fondness for taxidermy? Is it a mental illness, or is it just an example of a mom who never let go? You'll want to keep a close eye on those dramatic inner monologues he has between himself and dear old Mum.

So, if you're ready for a journey through the psyche of a deeply disturbed man with a penchant for bad parenting (and an even worse cabin décor), pick up Psycho, but remember to keep the lights on and the bathroom door locked. This is one psychological thriller that will have you questioning not only who the real villain is but your own shower habits.
